no, i think you're 100% right. one of Soros's funds was long the Euro, and that position was likely unwound over the past few days.

By now, everyone has a chance to digest the ECI number released yesterday. Even though the trend of that index has been up, it is not at a terrifying level yet. However, when I look around among the people that I know, it seems to me that ECI is again grossly under-estimating the real rise in salary and compensation. I will admit that I am not evaluating from a diverse enough group to come to the conclusion. But here is my observation.

I work in a public institution, and the rise in salary, excluding promotional merits, is pretty much in line with the official CPI number. But I am the exception. Most of my friends changed jobs in the last few years, several of them more than once. Every time they switched jobs, they received a sign-on bonus and a raise, which alone represented an increase beyond the extent of ECI total in the last 4-5 years. Besides, some of them have stock option gains that can buy them an expensive house in the Bay Area. As W. Buffet put it, if the stock options are not expenses to the company, what are they?

I am arguing for the case that government statistics are truly insufficient to judge the current inflation pressure in the country.
