I'm sure the shiny things are surface mount capacitors. You are absolutely right about the height. It seems they have a heavy porous, naturally black colored type material(ceramic?) glued over the chip cavity (for better disposal of heat?) instead of a gold plated piece of metal sheet soldered to the plating on the package.
