A mess!? With all that bathing, how could the kid be a mess!!?? If you ask me, I'd think he'd be mighty neat and clean! Just, kidding, but you already know that.

Seriously, it is so easy for those of us who have only very limited experience with children to pronounce and pontificate to those who have successfully raised children of whom they can and should be enormously proud. I try not to have to much to say about child-rearing to people who are actual parents.

A woman in my office whose 18-year-old daughter just had her first a week ago is very dependent upon her mother for advice in seemingly the most minute things concerning the new baby. What seems to surprise my co-worker the most is that the daughter actually welcomes and follows Mom's advice without question. Mom says the kid never much listened to her before. I told Mom that I thought such was a supreme and encompassing compliment from her daughter who was now herself a mom. She said she hadn't really thought of it in that light, but . . . she was still smiling wisely and wistfully when I left for home this morning.
