Why is it that hardware sells for so little, even though it requires great minds and a billion dollar fab, whereas software is so expensive

The most expensive software I paid the past 12 months is Turbo Tax. My OS and other Suites cost less than a floppy drive or a printer cable.

Scumbria,

I never posted that :P

I agree that MOST software is over priced. Not just windows. You buy Adobe Photoshop lately?... It's >$600usd a copy.

Hell let's break up adobe. They own the graphics market place, and used their dominance there to stop all over desktop publishing, and now they are trying to do it again with web authoring.

Well I'm not standing for it. I'm filing for an investigation :P

Scumbria,
Fine you write your OS and sell it for 45 cents! I can't believe Windows gets drubbed so much. It is a decent OS. With the myriad of hardware and software. Having all of it working under windows is impressive by itself. Although there are crashes sometimes and BSOD.... hey...it works and the competition hasn't made anything better. Hardware is cheap because it's made from sand! Software is expensive because it requires a lot of creativity.

Scumbria,

$180 is way too much to pay for an operating system. All it is is an oversized box and a CD. Windows ought to sell for about 49 cents. How much can a CD cost?

Obviously, this is coming from a hardware, not a software guy. :-)

OT Hi Scumbria, RE: "Why is it that hardware sells for so little, ... whereas software is so expensive (even though it requires only a single primate to do the programming and the only investment expense is a free computer w/ISP service"

Maybe because the computer is free : )
