If there weren't Microsoft and Windows, only a tiny percentage of people will have computers. Tench, Elmer, and Paul are probably very poor since there is no Intel, let alone have time to chat on SI.

This is ridiculous. Probably you weren't extant in 1974, when Intel was already a legendary innovator & competitor, having invented the DRAM, EPROM, & arguably, the uP, while Gates, Allen, & Ballmer were pimply-faced teenagers playing cards & teaching their time-sharing systems to do likewise somewhere in the vicinity of the Charles River. And visionaries like Lee Felsenstein & Ted Nelson were already talking about "community memory" & "hypertext", concepts which presaged the Internet and the World Wide Web. I mean, Steve Jobs was on the cover of Time magazine for helping to make computers personal in 1982, before Windows, or even the Macintosh, existed.

Dear Ken:

Horse hockey! Do you know how many computers are in your house (or apartment)? There is at least one in the VCR, one or more in the TV. Almost anything with a digital LED or LCD display has one. Your car probably has three or more, (Fuel Injection, Engine Management, Radio, CD). There is over 3 billion Z80 CPUs (or their derivatives) out there.

People had PCs before Microsoft Windows. Remember Digital Research. They had windows (GEM) before Microsoft. X Windows pre-dates even Apple Lisa. There is still text based internet browsers (they run much faster than IE or Netscape (No graphics or MM downloads)). Microsoft did not create PCs. PCs enabled Microsoft. People had Ataris, Commodore PETS, Trash 80's, and even DEC LSI-11's (H-11).

What myths Microsoft has people believing!

Pete

That is probably the most ridiculous statement that I have heard in a long time.
