I would probably agree with you at least if you are considering the long term effect (and since it happened about 100 years ago I would assume you are). However the poorest places in the world are probably not ready for such a change yet. They are in most ways less developed then the US was in 1900.

Maybe so, but unlike the American poor of 1900, the third world poor know that a much, much better world exists beyond their own. So if we don't want world anarchy and/or every poor world citizen at our doorstep, then it may be best that we help them up the corporate ladder.
