But even if he was a crappy father if Elian is NOT a US citizen and does NOT want asylum it is not our problem.

And that's the nub. We can't really know exactly what Juan was thinking or if he was a good father and Elian is simply too young to really know what he wants for himself. As such, we really have no prerogative legally or otherwise to get between the father and his son. My ONLY hesitation comes from the way the Clinton Administration has handled the matter. I smell a rat. JLA

That's a good take on the reason for the phone call. It's something I hadn't heard and a reason for him to call without having been in on the flight into the night.

I doubt Juan had any problem getting permission to come to the US. If anything I'd bet Castro was more than willing to give his blessing.
