Hi Minnow68, RE: "MSFT's quote $180,000,000.00 USD
RHAT's quote $79.95 USD"
---------------------------

RHAT Price/Earn (Feb 01) -184.8

I'm not familiar with their business model, but selling products at a loss is not sustainable. Maybe they could make money on the services, as a SI or VAR, after the capital injections run out.

Regards,
Amy J

I guess the Mexican school system had a choice.
OTOH, the IRS will get nothing from Linux and would have got a lot from Microsoft.

The real problem here is not so much Microsoft but the intrusion of the DOJ into the tech sector. The Microsoft case could drag on for years, draining Microsoft assets. AOL, CSCO, INTC or many others could be next.
Why do you think institutions dumped MSFT stock from 119 down to 65? Because Microsoft will be a better company next year if they are split up? I don't think so.
Try thinking about all the other lawsuits that can be brought against them. 19 states to start with.
It sickens me to see people on this thread miss what is really going on here....

Jim

Mike:

MSFT's quote $180,000,000.00 USD
RHAT's quote $79.95 USD

Whenever I see a difference by orders of magnitude
I know that one or the other is not right.

In US we have anti-dumping laws. USD 79.95 may not even
cover the COGS. Of course, DOJ may be too busy to
look into this one ;-)

Redhat wants market share, that's why they're offering such a low price, and it's not like they invented linux; most of the work was already done.

I do agree that 180 million is a lot to ask of Mexico. The regular consumer does get not price gouged though. 200 dollars for the full version, and 90 for an upgrade is not a lot. No one is forcing someone to upgrade either.

Mike,

MSFT's quote $180,000,000.00 USD
RHAT's quote $79.95 USD

I wouldn't be surprised if the Mexican government decided to go with MSFT and end up receiving a better value.

Why do you think companies hire big 5 accounting firms / management consulting firms and pay them $300 / hr average, while a bright guy in Bangladesh would bid $3 / hr, or a bright guy in SF would bid $100 / hr?

Do you think that anytime price of product A > price of product B, there is a price gauging going on?

How about the price gouging of the movie channels on your cable that charge you $10 per month (or whatever), while you can attach a piece of wire to your TV and receive CBS for "free"?
