Larry,

QCharts also allows any sigma multiple to be used, even different multiples upper and lower. However, in my experience with this TA device, it is the 2-sigma symmetric channel that is often respected by trading issues.

I presume that the reason for this is that arbitrage trading programs and other trading programs at big investment houses also use 2-sigma bands somewhere in their internals, but that's just a guess.

The way that I use this backward looking tool is to watch and see if a channel is respected during an edge encounter. If the channel is respected, I take a position that will profit if the stock then heads for the other edge. No guarantees of course, but it has proven to be a reliable indicator for me. If the edge is not respected, I take a position that assumes that the old channel is history and that a new channel (if any) will have a slope opposite of the original.
