Controls to keep guns out of the hands of irresponsible people are mostly effective in keeping guns out of the hands of responsible people. Likewise a total ban would keep you and me from having guns, whereas someone(a criminal, by definition) bent on having a weapon would find a way to get one. We have laws against drugs, and i don't need to delve on their effectiveness. The difference of course, in the case of guns, is that a ban leaves us defenseless against armed criminals.

There was less senseless violence years ago, before background checks, waiting periods and assault weapon bans. It seems that the more "gun laws" are passed, the worse the problem gets. Perhaps it would be time to look for the solution elsewhere (Enforcing discipline in schools and at home comes to mind).
