Fred,

<< I'd think something along the lines of "what are the top 2 newspapers, and top 4 magazines one should read" would be appropriate >>

My thoughts, FWIW

Let's say we develop this along the lines of your FAQ, but keep the RFM in mind.

We could list Moore's choices, then our consensus (which might included choices other than Moore's).

I also think we might want to include (at least eventually):

- Online Resources (Moore's & Ours)
- Links to online version of the newspapers & magazines where applicable
- Subscription newsletters of value

Once again, a worthwhile initiative. When FM gets outta jail we can refer him to it with the other links we have provided. <g>

Fred, ya gotta ask yourself, "will this cause the FAQ to bloat?

Maybe a poll of material people read, from time to time, results to be posted on the Lists thread. Your FAQ could then link to that. Avoids LindyBill's fear of bloat, and provides a non-judgemental guide.

Best,
John

PS--When Stan completes his tabulations that might appropriately be put on the Lists thread, imo.

I think the results would be very interesting, and that presenting them would take several or many FAQ pages. The largest single section of the Industrial volume of Standard Rate and Data Service is Computers and the No 2 is Electronics. Together they list over (300? maybe 400) magazines. General business magazines and consusmer computer publications are listed in the Consumer volume of SRDS. Add another 100.

Better, I think, to make up your own list and just publish it. Doing a survey would be extremely cumbersome. (On the other hand, maybe you could get SI to pay you to do it. Ask for something approaching $25k, which is about what these things are worth.)

<<"what are the top 2 newspapers, and top 4 magazines one should read">>

Preferred (alternate or additional choice)

WSJ (FT) (Business-oriented newspaper)
NYT (General newspaper)

Business Week (Economist) (Business-oriented weekly news)
Forbes (Fortune) (Business-oriented general magazine)
Red Herring (Industry Standard) (tech sector coverage)
SmartMoney (various clones) (general investing coverage)

PS can anyone tell me how to "file" a post from a thread into one's folders?
