Aristide, Jean-Bertrand
1953-, president of Haiti (1990-91,
1994-). A radical Roman Catholic priest
who opposed the DUVALIER
dictatorship, he won the 1990 presidential
election by a landslide. Ousted by the
military seven months after taking office,
he went into exile. A negotiated
settlement (1994) led to his return to
power in Oct. 1994. Long at odds with
the Catholic hierarchy, he resigned from
the priesthood in 1994. In 1995 Ren‚
Pr‚val was elected to succeed Aristide,
who was barred from running. EB copyright
