Mike,

The TV versus cable example is not free versus cable. One must still buy an antenna.

Well, My TV can receive 3 or 4 station with just a piece of wire attached (for which I did not pay). But for me, it is more about the value I receive. To me, ABC, NBC, CBS combined and all their programming are worthless, so the fact it is free does not increase value much. Of course there are hidden costs (spending time looking at moronic commercials, or cost of flipping to another worthless channel that doesn't have a commercial on [did anybody notice that the stations synchronize their commercials]). So the end effect is that the value received by watching the over the air channels is negative.

In Linux vs. Windows, you have to look at value, not just price. Which skill is more marketable, MS Office or Corel Office?

Joe

Yes: Price/Earn (Feb 01) -184.8

Some (not all) Linux companies seem like inexpensive acquisition targets for those with profitable business models.

Now that capital for these folks seems somewhat stalled, I wonder which options they might pursue:

1- raise product prices sp they aren't selling at a loss
2- get acquired
3- build a service model to generate revenue
4- use up their cash from VC & IPO capital injections
5- build a product which can be sold at a profit
6- another injection
