New equity financing was $31.283 billion in March 2000 and a record $79.165 billion in the first quarter, two and one-half times the year earlier figure. The full-year 1999 total of $171.7 billion was a record by a huge margin, up from $122.1 billion in 1998.

Margin debt rose again in March by $13.320 billion, to $278.530 billion, another new record; as a percentage of market value, this was another new postwar high. Margin debt jumped $50 billion in the first quarter of 2000 and an unprecedented 58% in the last seven months.
