Eric L: We are now at the numb of the 3rd gen FUD. The FUDers use 3rd gen to mean new spectrum. Some of us - especially those who think CDMA deserves a place at the table are agnostic. Why is new spectrum a magic key to 3rd gen? That is itself an oxymoron. (Shall we trade oxymoron labels?)

At base you have hit it. The Europeans and the Japanese are talking a different 3rd gen language than those of us (except perhaps yourself). To people like myself there is every reason to consider a technology which meets 3rd gen specs in full as 3rd gen, and it is a plus if it does so using up only 1.25 of spectrum. Why must it use more? Of course this can be used in new spectrum also, but what is so terrible or "oxymoron" about not being completely dependent on more spectrum to even function at all? A puzzling idea.

And you even suggest that GPRS is 3rd gen somehow and 1XRTT is not? Yet both operate in the current spectrum. What makes GPRS 3rd gen? Is it because it is an upgrade to GSM and therefore within the club, while IXRTT is an upgrade to CDMA One and not within the club? The European club that is? Curious.

Best.

Eric L,

Thanks. The funny thing is that if one posted "TDMA, YUK!" on the AWE(ful) thread, I fear many would interpret it as a trading strategy.

Your cautionary words not to be too dismissive of EDGE are interesting.

Did you see the message from the post from fellow suggesting that the AWE network could carry CDMA packets?
