The market was way, way overpriced and had not had a significant correction for a number of years. So it's no surprise we had the correction of the magnitude recently seen.

All of my friends except for one is not into margin at this time. I am not currently in margin now but have used it in the past when opportunities have presented themselves.

I think that if you looked at the "typical" margin investor that was over leveraged you would find he was relatively new to investing.

Margin is a vehicle for experienced investors.

>>Bob Metcalfe

Gee, if that's the old COMS Metcalfe then an oracle he ain't. Go to the Forbes' site and read the famous exhanges from a few years back. As I recall, Metcalfe was predicting that the internet would collapse because of all the new users, while Gilder explained quite astutely why Metcalfe hadn't a basic understanding of internet.

If he's that the same guy, I wouldn't be buying. Btw, that article is about a year old.

As for your other article, try reading it. That article refers to US stats and last time I looked, Cisco served the world and internet usage is exploding in that larger and relatively untapped market.

Here's some of Metcalfe's more famous predictions:

Not true, Rarebird. The growth of the Internet is not slowing, the growth RATE is slowing. I don't have to tell you the difference. Anyone could tell you that if the rate is slowing, this is not bad news at all, just inevitable news. It's called the law of big numbers.

As for Ackerman, he says bandwidth supply greatly exceeds the demand for it for the next few years. Well, somebody please remind Ackerman that video over the Internet is more than a 1Kb file. :) Also, please remind him that the wireless Internet doesn't travel through the ether alone - it takes landbased bandwidth too!

Whoops!!!! That article... if you read the entire thing.

Growth in the number of Internet hosts is not growth in the number of users. And growth in users is not growth in
traffic. Traffic growth rates are likely much higher than those of hosts, as users spend more hours online, and as the
bandwidths consumed by new applications increase.

That is... growth for infrastructure equipment deployments can not be predicted by growth in DNS hosts. Furthermore the article assume Europe and the US is the entire world. Last I checked the two largest countries in population on the planet (India and China) are not in his study. Why? Because the numbers are too small right now to worry about. Is the assumption that this population will never "go on-line"??? I think that's a poor assumption. I dare say that the growth rate declines are an short term abberation and again, are no indicator of net traffic and deployment requirements... and to assume otherwise demonstrates a lack of understanding of the market and the technology.
