AL:

What is your strategy on leaps? Do you trade them regularly? Buy and Hold till expiration. Trade at pre-set gains regardless of time?

I've never really traded them as I generally stay only one or two months out; however I'm starting to rethink a new strategy where trading leaps may offer more safety in the event we get a market downturn of a month or so (safety by giving you more time). Off the cuff, I can't see paying such a premium for time only, and then hold till an uncertain expiration. But if one were to say, sell automatically at a 50% gain regardless of when, then you have time to ride out a 50% or more loss. One example, last week I bought a couple LSI Jan. '01 55's for 15 (with LSI at 54). So LSI has to get to 70 by Jan. for me to break even. However, those calls are now worth 21 (nearing
50% gain already. On the other hand, the LSI May 55's I bought at the same time for 5 3/4 are now worth over 9---clearly better performance, but greater time risk.

Thoughts?

Al..Heheheh..LoL... My guests are regaling me with tales of sins (not SINs) in the corporate offices -- How about putting all your retirement money into the top internet stocks -- right at the top? Another who ran his $160k portfolio down to $4k by shorting YHOO at $60.
Actually, a mid-cap portfolio doesn't sound all that bad! <G>
Seriously, the crazy market of late-'98/99 is nearly unprecedented. If you were able to hang on to any of it, count your blessings -- I am <G>

Unusual market today -- I really mis-read which sectors would do the best. Lost money on LTXX and LSI, and didn't make much on VTSS, TXCC, CNXT, CYMI, etc... thank goodness for the mutual funds-- they offset my wilder forrays...
