Tazio, thank you for your kind words. <<Do not dismiss them. I truly believe them to be dangerous. As for understanding them, I would not place much hope of achieving such.>> I feel like I have some level of understanding of the Christian fundamentalist contingent of the far right. It's not hard to understand that, for people who are getting their marching orders verbatim from God, of course they're going to be unreceptive to the notion that, on Earth, you're expected to work through a consensus process with a bunch of misguided heathen who happen to be your fellow citizens. From this I have concluded that it is inherently unfeasible to achieve a consensus when fundamentalist Christians are part of the equation. OTOH, I have had some success in convincing isolated members of that group that it is at least theoretical possible for a non-Christian to be a good person, a good citizen, a good neighbor, and a good friend--even if heaven is not in the cards. That's the beginning of tolerance, and it's a start. <<...in order to "get along in this world" a deeper attempt to understand other points of view requires of us to be more "open".>> The anti-government contingent of the far right, OTOH, is still way beyond my understanding. But I have to keep trying for a variety of reasons. One is that it's our civic duty to try to include everyone in the consensus process. Another is that it's always possible that there just might be some kernel of truth in there somewhere. A third is that it could be dangerous to leave them to stew amongst themselves without a mainstream touchstone. And maybe the biggest reason--I can't resist the challenge. So I keep trying... Karen
