Although I basically agree with your remarks, I wouldn't underestimate the significance of MSFT's stranglehold on the desktop with their Windows monopoly, or MSFT's capacity to leverage it to new platforms. As they migrate to PDAs, there is an inevitable tradeoff between power and ease-of-use. MSFT is power. Palm is ease of use. It is always more difficult to retrofit an existing platform to a new device than to build a new platform.

PDAs are still very immature and defacto standards are being hammered out as we write. I'm encountering conflicts right now trying to get both Lotus EasySync and AvantGo to both work with my Palm. I don't see MSFT having any easier time of it.
