There weren't "several"- there was one cousin. Everyone else said he was a doting father. Even all the other relatives said that- that is why they wanted Juan HERE in this country- because they liked him.

The only physical abuse allegation I saw originated with the Miami relatives by way of Sister Jeanne after the situation became so divided, and she admitted that was where she heard it. I haven't seen any reports about his being absent at all--- quite the opposite, I read that Elian spent more time with him than his mother. It's getting to the point I don't believe ANYTHING I read, although I don't know why you would think the NYT article is such fluff- it seemed pretty well done to me.

But you are saying you would GUESS the negative reports are true, and your GUESS is based ONLY on his delay in coming here, the facts of which we still know nothing about.
That just seems either intellectually dishonest or lazy.
I think you are choosing to believe something only because it helps you justify the conclusion you reached and want to stick with emotionally. There's a lot of that now; it's really tempting--- it's as if people have just grown exhausted and said- no more... this is what I'm going to believe- I don't CARE whether it's true or not. Why is this? Is it just easier? I'm having to fight the urge.

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why your presumption that JUan is an absentee father makes much difference to the case except to let us know what you FEEL- which is ok if you admit that, just like I FEEL that mom wasn't a saint, but I don't know anything, really. He's now the surviving parent, and as such, we get back to the custody, asylum, rights argument which needs to be decided by law.

I think juans obscene gesture speaks volumes about his character...given the context.

Add to that the fact that juan's mother has a bit of a problem when it comes to Elian's right to be quiet and say nothing if that's how he felt upon seeing her...the last thing a 'shy' child needs is HUMILIATION...of any kind.
Let's remember that juan is a product of this woman...abuse is passed on to the next generation...and it never ends until the CYCLE of abuse is broken...somehow.

Combine the evidenced character of these two individuals, [juan and juan's mother], and I am CLEAR on Elizabeth's intention to get her child away from this injustice...this demolition of the Spirit and state sanctioned slavery.

I also think that the 'delay' in juan's arrival tells us just how restrictive and controlled life on that island is. Free Cuba.

Free Elian!
