SEOUL--Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. here today announced development of a new 512-megabit DRAM with 0.12-micron design rules. The Korean chip maker claimed to be the first in the industry to successfully apply that level of process technology to a commercial memory design.

Samsung said the new 512-Mbit DRAM will be housed in the same plastic package as current 256-Mbit chips, making memory upgrades for personal computers simpler. The 512-Mbit design will support the PC-100 and PC-133 synchronous DRAM format as well as the double data rate (DDR) standard, according to Samsung.

Chang-Gyu Hwang, vice president and CEO of Samsung's Memory Division, predicted that the new 512-Mbit DRAM design will help to quickly usher in the next generation of memory chips because of its small die size and ease of upgrades. Samsung did not release details about the 512-Mbit chip measurements.

The Korean memory maker predicted that the market for 512-Mbit DRAMs to reach $20 million in 2001, and it said that segment will reach $41.1 billion worldwide by 2004.

Thirty-six 512-Mbit DRAMs can be used to create 2-gigabyte memory modules, said Samsung, which also predicted that housing the higher density chips in the same package as 256-Mbit devices will eliminate the need for changing PC motherboards in the near future.
