Pete,

Wordstar had all that, but is only 10 MB. Larger programs take longer to load.

Given today's hardware, these facts are irrelevant. On my home computer, which is by no means state of the art (dual Celeron 366), the time it takes to load, the amount of diskspace Office takes, and the memory footprint of the loaded app is hardly noticeable. I don't know what Wordstar can do compared to Word, but in the real world, the complaints I hear more often is "why didn't Excel install my analysis toolkit? Why do they make me add it manually? Why don't I have the Solver? Where can I get more clipart?" rather than "The Office takes too much diskspace".

Even a utility, like MS Backup, can not read backups generated by the previous version.

I hate this as well. But sometimes, you have to break compatibility to add new functionality. Than you are left with adding more import and conversion tools (the stuff you call bloat)
