Taiwan Hot Stock: United Micro Rise On Good 1Q Profit
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Shares in United Microelectronics Corp. (2303.TW) were up NT$0.5, or 0.5%, at NT$106.5 ($1=NT$30.677) on volume of 46.4 million shares at 0245 GMT (10:45 p.m. EDT Monday) Tuesday.
Buying interest in the chipmaker remains strong after it said last week that post-merger first-quarter net profit totaled NT$7.45 billion, said analysts. Late last year, United Microelectronics merged with four of its affiliates in a bid to boost efficiency and reduce costs.

The stock bucked the downward trend in the technology sector, which is down 1.1% in early trading Tuesday, led by losses in Internet-related stocks.

Systems Board of Directors

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2000--N. Damodar (Dan) Reddy, chief executive officer (CEO) of Alliance Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ALSC), today joined the board of directors of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) supplier Tharas Systems Inc. Both companies are headquartered in Santa Clara, Calif.

Other board members include Prabhu Goel, founder of Gateway Design Automation, Raj Parekh of Redwood Ventures, and Tharas Systems' CEO Steve Carlson and its Chief Technical Officer Subbu Ganesan.

"Dan Reddy is a welcome addition to the Tharas Systems Board of Directors," says Carlson. "His business acumen and semiconductor technology expertise will be well utilized."

"Tharas Systems has an outstanding opportunity to capitalize on the resurgence in the application-specific hardware market," adds Reddy. "Its ASIC-based architecture gives it the unfair advantage that we look for in an investment."

Reddy co-founded Alliance Semiconductor and has served as its chairman of the board, CEO and president from its inception in 1985. From 1983-1985, he served as president and CEO of Modular Semiconductor, Inc. From 1980-1983, he served as manager of Advanced CMOS Technology Development at Synertek, Inc., a subsidiary of Honeywell, Inc.

Previously, Reddy held various research and development and management positions at Four Phase Systems, a subsidiary of Motorola, Inc., Fairchild Semiconductor and RCA Technology Center.

Reddy also serves on the Board of Directors of United Semiconductor Corporation, a Taiwanese company that owns and operates an eight-inch wafer manufacturing facility using advanced process technologies, and FED Corporation, a privately-held flat panel display company in the formative stage. He also serves as Board Supervisor for United Silicon Inc., a Taiwanese Company formed to construct, own, and operate an eight-inch wafer manufacturing facility using Advanced Processing Technologies.

In 1995, Alliance Semiconductor was named by Fortune magazine as the eighth fastest growing company in the United States. Also in 1995, Reddy was selected as Entrepreneur of the Year in Northern California, an award sponsored by Inc. magazine, Ernst & Young and Merrill Lynch.

Reddy holds a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from North Dakota State University and a M.B.A. from Santa Clara University.
