Dan re <<I think AMD is very much aware of the importance of the infrastructure issue and has done a fabulous job.>>

I agree.

Not only AMD had to make a guarantee to the MB manufacturers, AMD had to also give a $30 rebate to all the OEM's who built an Athlon system early on to make up for the high cost of the MB.

AMD indeed putt all its eggs in one basket and pushed the infrastructure as hard as it could. And it did very well!

Dan,

<AMD also guaranteed the sale of every Athlon motherboard produced and made sure there were plenty of 750 chipsets available. I really don't know what else could have been done.>

Ask Kash, he was pretty vocal on what needed to be done on this topic ;-)

<I think AMD is very much aware of the importance of the infrastructure issue and has done a fabulous job. Compare what cash strapped resource poor AMD accomplished next to what money-coming-out-of-its-ears design-centers-all-over-the-place Intel was able to do with its new Rambus platform and 800 series chipset family.>

No doubt, AMD's execution right now looks phenomenal compared to Intel. Just that I do not find it acceptable to be "sold out" or "limited by motherboards" when you have a nearly empty mega fab. Clearly my bar for considering AMD performance "excellent" is not shared by some of the folks on this thread. That's OK.
