I can understand your gripe. OTOH, one of the biggest problems moving an OS forward is trying to maintain backward compatibility, legacy if you will. You apparently end up with a overload of code which invites conflicts and poor performance. Yet MS tried to keep the legacy.
I guess they didn't go back far enough with USB support or Office. Maybe they planned it that way.
