Sunnyvale, California, May 1 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., whose stock is the best performer in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index this year, will ask shareholders to boost the authorized shares outstanding to enable it to split its stock.

Advanced Micro wants to up the number of shares it may issue to 750 million from 250 million, according to an amended proxy filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Shareholders will vote on the plan at a special meeting May 25. The company's shares rose 4 to 91 1/2 at midday after touching a record 92.

Advanced Micro, Intel Corp.'s chief rival in the market for personal computer processors, has seen its stock soar more than fivefold in the past 12 months as it nabbed market share and unveiled new products. For the first time in years, Advanced Micro beat Intel to market with faster chips, introducing a 1 gigahertz chip in March.

Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro said in the filing that the increase will give the board the ability to split the company's stock in the form of a stock dividend. No such plan has been unveiled. Advanced Micro last split its stock in 1983.
