Alcatel, Fujitsu launch 3G venture
French-Japanese alliance targets Ericsson, Nokia

PARIS (CBS, MW) -- Alcatel SA, France?s biggest telecoms equipment maker, said Tuesday it?s forming a joint venture with Fujitsu Ltd. of Japan to develop and manufacture next generation mobile-phone networks.

Alcatel (ALA: news, msgs) will own 66 percent of the shares in the new company, with Fujitsu holding the rest.

The French-Japanese alliance aims to combine resources to grab market share from larger rivals such as Sweden?s Ericsson AB (ERICY: news, msgs) and Nokia Oyj (NOK: news, msgs) of Finland in third generation (3G) mobile communications networks.

Fujitsu (FJTSY: news, msgs) and Alcatel said the venture would have 2,000 engineers and the first product would be ready to hit the market during the first half of next year.

?This alliance is a major step forward for Alcatel?s mobile activities,? Alcatel?s senior executive vice president, Jean-Pierre Halbron, said in a statement
