William <venture investments> I agree, investing in companies without earnings is venture investing. It was not that long ago that venture investments were made by venture capitalists, and IPOs did not happen until firms had profits. IPOs now happen years before the firms leave the "venture investment" stage. As such, investors buying stocks in these companies need to be aware than some, perhaps most, and possibly all of the money they put into these stocks is 100% at risk -- the companies might never turn a profit and all their money might be lost. These are purely speculative plays.
