Innocently, the government assumed that nonproduction workers clocked an average of 37.6 hours per week in the months during which everybody who had anything to do with the maintenance and smooth running of a computer system was sleeping on the floor of his or her office in full crisis mode. By underestimating the number of hours worked, the government flattered the efficiency with which the work was performed.

That's an interesting point. I certainly hope that the gubbermint statisticians apply different rules to different types of workers.

For example, I know very few programmer types working for the high adrenaline companies that work < 40 hours.

The push to deliver everything on "internet time" has a lot of shops driving their people at incredible rates. I even saw something on the news this year about a start up that had built a dorm within their office and free Jolt cola for all.

Computer Associates has for years provided free Carbohydrates in the am, at every office world wide.

Its all in the sugar I tell ya!
