"Siberia! - that Russian hell, is with all its phantoms unendingly before me. Winter and death are felt to be hovering over these scenes where under the despotism the only criminal is the man who goes unpunished".
(Marquis de Custine 1989: 504-505)

At least there is consistency between the twilight world of today's reactionaries and the distorted vision of their heroes.

For those who can't be bothered here's a summary:

Ayn Rand's testimony is in support of the McCarthy Inquisition at a time when the witch hunt focused on a war-time propaganda movie made in Hollywood in 1943. The movie was created to popularize the plight of Mother Russia after the German Invasion. The film's dark purpose was to rally the US public around their ally, blah blah. Despite the context, Ayn is appalled that any film could be favorable to the Russians, especially one that dares to portray several smiling people as Russian. In a search for deeper truths, Ayn blurts out that World War II might have been easier to win if Russia had collapsed under the Nazi onslaught. It's not her finest hour:

"I don't know, because on the other hand I think we could have used the lend-lease supplies that we sent there to much better advantage ourselves."

Somehow all of this wacky revisionism foreshadows Ruby Ridge, justifies the murder of four ATF agents at Waco, the Oklahoma bombing and in the case of Elian, justifies the theft of a child from his father.

Any person who really believed in freedom would have given the finger to the house committee on Un American activities. I always disliked Ayn- I find her philosophy empty and humorless- and NOW I see she is a hypocrite too.

The house committee for Un American activities was like the Star Chamber and a secret police force all rolled into one- the IRONY of dissing Russia to an organization like that is IMMENSE. That committee was antithetical to freedom, to art, to everything that should be American. For Ayn to criticize the USSR and go along with the house Committee is either self interested hypocrisy or total blindness- I wonder which it was? Ugh. Ayn Rand makes me sick.

What does she have to say about the John Wayne/Rambo-type fantasies?
