From The Wall Street Journal

Broadcom Corp. is expected to announce today that it has developed a low-cost chip that will enable high-speed transmission of data over fiber-optic cables. This is the Irvine, Calif., company's first attempt to break into the fast-growing optical networking market. Broadcom, which makes chips used in communications products such as cable modems and TV set-top boxes, said its new chip, based on Ethernet technology, will support the transmission of data at a rate of 10 gigabits a second over existing fiber cable lines. The company said the chip will enable networking-equipment makers to set up high-speed Internet access in wide area networks and connect corporate networks with home users. The company said it expects to begin shipping the chips, priced at $88 apiece, within 90 days.
