I have already recanted some of the statements I made about the Pocket PC handhelds with regard to mass appeal and cost ("sticker shock")...

In defense of Casio, I read the following news in this month's Pocket PC Magazine

"Casio is also near release of a "Mobile Multimedia" Pocket PC. This device will be smaller than the E-115 and be targeted towards users interested in personal information management and multimedia entertainment. It will include a stereo headphone jack, 65K color touchscreen, and will have all of the standard Pocket PC applications built in. It will have a MultiMedia Card slot instead of a CompactFlash slot. MultiMedia Cards are smaller storage cards that can incorporate SD Card copyright protection for downloaded music files. I expect the ruggedized and multimedia devices to be announced this summer."

CompactFlash, in particular CF+ functionality, is a big plus which will be sacrificed in these devices. However, MMC and SDMC have distinct advantages over CompactFlash. For example, the link to SmartDisk is crucial and an important advantage that CompactFlash lacked against the floppy and SmartMedia. Now the playing field appears to be leveled.
