When we lived in suburban DC, I don't recall ever seeding the lawn. Fertilizing yeah, with one of those bins-on-wheels, and endless mowing and edging.
What we got in the back yard (shady) was failure of the lawn to thrive, so after a while my dad shrugged (an unnatural move; might'a caused a hairline fracture of the clavicle) and allowed that area to go to natives, like spring beauty, wild ginger and what's that three-leafed one with the small green calla lily flower.
