so I remember the beginnings.
In 1982 and for the next several years the OS was well known. You could buy extensive documentation (I have a 10 pounder by microsoft and several by IBM) for the OS (MS-DOS). If you remember, there were many application choices,
Borland, Word Perfect, GEM, Lotus, and many others. The business was ripe for some consolidation, but it wasn't until Windows and it's generally unknown interface became dominant that Microsoft applications became dominant.

You are right....they had competition in the beginning.

Of course, they've done lots of things right - but I
also believe that for quite some time, they've also
had an unfair advantage.
