As a follow-on to the BRCM announcement, allow me to interject the following.
The HSSG (HigherSpeedStudyGroup) of the IEEE is working on the 10GEther standard and specifications. This will be known as IEEE-802.3ae. There are many, many participants
involved in this development and they include chip makers
of which BRCM is just one. Since the standard is not finished, it would seem pre-mature of BRCM to make such an
announcement. If anyone is interested in the continuing
developments and discussions, the following links to the
discussion archives might be valuable.

manta.ieee.org

There are many facets to the development of the 10GE standard, and the application of 10GE in the LAN, MAN and WAN. Note that 10GE is approximately the same bit rate capacity for the payload as OC-192c.
Note that companies do not participate directly in the development. Engineers do.

Can someone shed light on what impact, if any, this brcm product might have on furthering the overall rollout of fiberoptic networks?
TIA
Ken

Hey Steve,..Re:.thoughts from CSFB on the optical chips from BRCM

Thanks for the CSFB brief on the BRCM new product. I would have never guessed HWP but upon a little digging, found the following Agilent stuff.<g>

Agilent Technologies to Expand Small-Form-Factor Portfolio With New 2.5 Gigabit-Per-Second Optical Transceivers

Agilent Acquires Optical Technology Center Feb 23, 2000
Acquisition to Speed Agilent's Delivery of 10Gb/s and DWDM Technologies to Telecom and Datacom Markets
semiconductor.agilent.com@@@@1247918896.0957292647@@@@&BV_EngineID=halhikgfdhfbemfcgjcfijcio.0&clickAction=PressRelease

Couldn't load the second news brief, kept getting an error but will look again later. In fact when trying the link again, that story is not there anymore!

Looks like I need to make some kind of organization graphic to see where and how all this stuff fits in? <g>

Best,

Lee
