It is amusing how, whenever the topic of Communism comes up, even tangentially, the anti-anti-communists invoke the name McCarthy and think they've scored some kind of debating knock out punch. The McCarthy era was a unique period in history. It is a story about government's attempt to deal with a poorly understood but VERY REAL threat. And it's a story about a man who got carried away by the moment and was destroyed. There are NO broader lessons in it about American justice, or lack thereof OR in general about the character of anti-communists of the era or the justice of their cause.
