Reducing WIP by only 30%? I'd be surprised if they don't get more. There's often a lot of wafers stacked up in these fabs (Lucent is rather "out on point" on reducing WIP wafer counts, I believe, because of their application of the Theory of Constraints management philosophy to their operations), and it's not just at/before the large-load tools, like furnaces.

If Lucent demonstrates they can reduce WIP a further 30%, however, they'll be able to turn out new products much faster than their competition, and that's not to be sneezed at! Other firms would have to quickly adjust, or they'd be at a distinct disadvantage.

Very interesting information, Brian!
