Says Treasury Gold Was Stolen in 1997 TIRANA - The theft of gold coins worth $2.8 million from the Albanian treasury announced last weekend took place in March 1997 when the country plunged into anarchy, a government spokesman said on Wednesday. Prime Minister Ilir Meta?s statement that gold was missing sparked a war of words between his ruling Socialists and the opposition Democratic Party that was in power at the time. Meta, whose Socialist-led coalition defeated the Democratic Party of ex-president Sali Berisha in snap polls in June 1997, was briefed on Wednesday about the investigation by the prosecutor general and security service chiefs. ?The investigation by the prosecutor?s office shows that the theft took place in March 1997,? government spokesman Thoma Gellci told reporters after the meeting. ?They assured the Prime Minister that the authors of the treasure?s theft will be disclosed very soon.? Law and order broke down in the ex-communist Balkan nation after protesters, blaming the then Democratic Party government for the collapse of fraudulent pyramid investment schemes, clashed with police and looted army weapons depots. The stolen gold had been kept in a secret vault, code-named ?River?. The state treasure was transferred for security reasons from the warehouses in Skrapar, in southern Albania, to the tunnels of Dajti mountain and those of Krraba. Since 1997, regular and periodic three-monthly official checks should have been conducted in order for the state to be kept informed about what was contained in its treasury. But this failed to happen and no checks were even carried out. Berisha said in January this year that the treasury had been robbed and accused ?elements of the current government? of being involved in stealing the gold from a tunnel in the rocky mountain of Krraba, south of Tirana. ?The thieves are crying ?stop thief!?,? senior Democratic Party member of parliament Shaban Memia said in response to Gellci?s statement. Justifying the government?s silence, Gellci said it knew before the Democrats? warning that a theft had taken place but was forced to keep the investigation secret. ?Those who have exact figures of the treasure stolen, should know the authors too,? Gellci said. The government was determined to arrest the culprits and find the gold, he said. Four guards have been arrested. The theft is likely to dominate the campaign for local elections in October, which are being monitored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The Whole State at Treasury Stake Bank of Albania (BoA) said on Wednesday that the state treasure depots are under the control of the Ministry of interior, in an effort to shift responsibility. The BoA said in a press release that the central bank is open and ?at the disposal of law enforcement organs? in helping to solve the state treasury theft, a bank spokesman said. ?We are open to abiding by the rules and our competencies in order to be transparent to the public opinion,? a BoA press release said. Senior parliament member Sabri Godo has backed a proposal of the Socialist Party grouping to set up a parliamentary commission, to push the Albanian state authorities in finding as soon as possible the robbers. ?A joint commission should be set up in order for the case be disclosed,? Godo said in an interview with TV channel Klan. Godo said that the commission should be headed by an opposition representative. Socialist deputy and former minister of finance Arben Malaj conceded on Wednesday that the chairman of the commission could be from the opposition. ?The stolen treasury does not belong to any party or government, but to the Albanian people, thus let the chairman be from the opposition, but the most important thing is to find the thieves,? Malaj said.albaniannews.com
