HI Steven-

There is a lot of emotional response involved as people look at Juan GOnazales; they seem to want to find reasons he shouldn't have his son. (He didn't come
right away, he made obscene gestures at us, he is a prisoner of Castro who can't say what he really wants)> Then there are the revealing expressions of wonderful American materialism -(he is poor, they live in a two bedroom, one bath renovated apartment, their car is old, they don't have toilet paper, or even enough food). But while all that may be, probably is, true, it still doesn't (IMO) allow us to take a child from his parent. Our belief
in the sanctity of the family is one of our strengths. The standards we set to interfere in this are high and they need to be- otherwise, we would see families being torn asunder for any reason. They are based primarily on findings of abuse and neglect and don't include religion, education, ethnicity or political beliefs, unless they relate directly to the abuse and even then they are not the abuse, but the means. Elian, by all accounts, is
not, and wasn't, an abused child.

Much as we may hate to see Elian go back to Cuba, as
painful as it would be, I think we do more damage to violate our own laws because we believe he has a better life here. These laws are the very ones that will protect our rights when someone doesn't like our viewpoint.

Sure, keep pounding that drum. A logical response would have discussed the documented facts, not the relative's DUI convictions or my feelings toward Cubans. Try logic, you might like it.
