Tench - RE: "I just don't believe for a moment that Sledgehammer will come right out of the chute as a dual-core processor. AMD needs to get the single-core version working first, then work on the dual-core version. Same thing with the integrated north bridge, it's just too soon to feature on the first generation of Sledgehammer."

Yeah, I agree. The first one will probably be a plain jane Sledgehammer, like the first Athlon had nothing fancy. But if these dual core Sledgehammers w/an integrated north bridge come out too late in 2001, McKinley's performance may easily trump it, even if these two don't compete with each other. But IA 32 ain't dying away next year so AMD should be fine.

"This is one reason why I think AMD's LDT is going to be a hit, if AMD can execute on this strategy."

A bigger hit than a shared bus? ;) We'll find out soon enough. I wonder what McKinley is made of. But what I really wonder is when Intel will divulge McKinley's innards. Will they do it this year at the IDF or the big Microprocessor forum? If they do it this year, they may let even more air out of the MerDUD bag, and its pretty low already. Intel has already said McKinley will be much faster than MerDUD so if they show McKinley off this year people may just wait for McKinley, like HP (I think) has recommended.

PS: If McKinley doesn't live up to its hype I already have a nickname lined up - McKrap. I might as well (TM) as early as I can. ;)
