Scumbria,
RE:"It was inevitable that this sort of complaining would return to the thread. It has only been a few weeks since Dresden was brought up to production speed. AMD is executing incredibly well"

Ok, so I'm a bit of a taskmaster on this. I just see AMD with this incredible opportunity to slam dunk Intel and get a little edgy. Actually I'm more worried about the motherboard situation for Duron and T-bird. We are still in the dark about whether they will run on current motherboards via slocket or not and how they cool.
We do know that AMD has ceased Athlon wafer production so AMD must be very confident about Duron and Athlon being here in force within a couple months.
You also know that I have been an AMD supporter for years...

RE:"Do you have any idea how long it takes to bring an SMP chipset into production?"

Sorry, I do not. Obviously it takes a while or AMD hasn't had enough money to throw at it.

RE:"Some race. $100 vs. $470. Are you trying to be funny?"

I know $470 sounds high but it's coming down. I do not know how low it can go. I do know Intel is staking Willy and Timna on RAMBUS...either this is the stupidest thing I've seen in a while or Intel expects RDRAM to drop a lot more by the fall. Maybe I just don't want to leave it to chance. <G>

It was inevitable that this sort of complaining would return to the thread. It has only been a few weeks since Dresden was brought up to production speed. AMD is executing incredibly well. They have had SMP chipsets running in the lab for a year now. Do you have any idea how long it takes to bring an SMP chipset into production?

Scumbria,

I have not followed the situation with the chipsets so I can't comment on Jim's concerns but I hardly took what he said as complaining. Last nite, I expressed disappointment with the ramp at Dresden. I had thought that AMD was going slow with Dresden because Fab 25 production was sufficient to meet demand and that AMD was playing it smart by keeping Dresden off line until required so that it would not incur additional expense needlessly. In fact I thought AMD's approach on this matter was clever and said so.

Now we hear that AMD is sold out for the quarter and that Sanders wishes he had more product to sell. Assuming that Dresden's ramp up has been unusually slow, then the slowness of the ramp has caused AMD to lose some opportunities and I find that unfortunate.

That does not change the fact that AMD is executing well. But isn't it important to identify problems or issues that may jeopardize our investments? Like you did with Willamette? I thought that was a major focus of this thread.
Do you disagree?
