"I am not condoning our actions over there."

Good. That would be a fine place to start. And to stay, the better to reflect.

"Are you seriously trying to say that the actions of the CIA in Guatemala were undertaken for the sole purpose of making them a banana republic?"

No, i'm saying they were undertaken to keep Guatemala a banana republic.

"But when you have a choice of joning the guerillas or being killed."

This is the opposite of the truth of the case - the maya were given the choice of being serfs to the ruling elite and its US connections, or being killed. Do you know what happened when the US-trained and -organised army came to a village? If there was absolutely no resistance whatsoever [and more than once a reluctance to instantly smile and grovel simultaneously was taken as resistance], and if all the men were in the village, and if all members of the army unit were in a particularly good mood, they didn't torture and shoot the people and then burn the village and destroy their crops. Otherwise, they did. If all the people ran as they were coming, which was most often the case, then they would just shoot such old ones and women and children as were straggling, then burn the crops, taking special care to destroy all food supply so that the rest would starve.

"That is the extent of the freedom to choose."

That's the choice they had - virtual slavery in the name of your favorite ism, or death, or running away ... most did learn very quickly to run away, and of those many came north, which contributes to this day to the problems of Chiapas, as its effects on population movement among the maya were second only to the eruption of Chichonal.

I am aware of Mench£ ... there is little you can teach me about the maya, i know them, i've lived among them, i'm married to one.

But you certainly are teaching me about your ism ... what is quite revealing is your use of it to steal another man's son ... sorry to inform you, though, that in light of my experience with you ism-spouters, such a use comes as no great surprise.
