mike, i'm an empirical kinda guy. i only do what works. i've heard lots of negativity about the zone. however, most of it doesn't make sense. in fact, the logic is on par w/ a dan niles micron report (yep, these folks tend not to read what they write about, either ;-) did you read the contradictions from the experts? in one sentence they say the zone doesn't help w/ weight loss. in the VERY NEXT SENTENCE they say that weight loss is due to calorie restriction. i'm in awe. it seems the desire of that expert to "attack" the zone on all fronts overwhelmed their ability to think clearly. they say the zone's carbo level is unhealthy and don't explain why or provide supporting evidence. why? later on another expert said that the zone does help control appetite and facilitate weight loss, in direct contrast to what the contradictory expert claimed. that is why i take the time to read the concepts for myself. i don't let financial experts like niles tell me micron is a good stock at $65 and i don't let folks that can't link two coherent sentences together tell me what is wrong w/ a particular diet. diet is like religion and politics. emotions run very high. there is nothing wrong with applying zone principles and eating larger volumes of food than recommended. you can always back off if your appetite drops and you feel better. i had a problem w/ excessive weight loss (not hunger) and just ate more to compensate. btw, isn't that the problem most folks want to have? ;-) a couple caveats: 1. lots of conclusions are reached by sears that may or may not be true. however, lots of research has been done by him with amazing results - i've never seen that research proven false - nor have i seen an attempt to do so. even though it w/b quite easy. 2. i'll look into the fiber issue. there may be something there. however, sears is really high on oatmeal as a carbohydrate. i get 4 g of fiber with my breakfast. i thought veggies were high in fiber. i thopught fruits had some. funny me, i thought they all had fiber. i'll doublecheck. the experts that attack the zone support this diet...intelihealth.com "It is reasonable to suggest that the clinical use of current dietary guidelines aimed at decreasing risk of coronary heart disease be re-examined," the researchers concluded." these experts say the zone is harmless...abcnews.go.com "However, many of Sears? critics agree that a diet lower in carbohydrates is not harmful and can have positive results." is that why the one expert couldn't cite the harm in zone level carbos - there isn't any? just some thoughts. i've done a fair amount of investigating on this issue and i've concluded that, at worst, the zone isn't harmful. at best, i feel noticeably better (due to consistent glucose levels being fed to my brain?) and there are other, longer term, benefits.
