Chuck,

When the Duron chips come out, we will know the power consumption, but I don't think it is low enough to be in the laptops.

Chuck, <Not that I have much regard for Shriner but it is interesting that he took a dig at AMD marketing in the HotRail CNET article.>

Just curious. What's wrong with Shriner from HotRail?

Once upon a time ThunderBird was supposed to have preceded Spitfire on the roadmap. It also made a lot of sense because Thunderbird would replace current Athlons and sockets and slotkets would be a great way to ease into infrastructure. Socketed parts can rampup right behind and ease the transition pains.

Chuck, one other element that makes this a problem is the potential performance differential. If the T-Bird came out before Spitfire, then the significant performance increase anticipated with a large full-speed cache could be emphasized to distinguish the product. Instead, we could have a situation where a value product, the Duron, may eclipse current Athlon performance. This forces them to de-emphasize performance.

Also, you have a reasonable supply of Slot A MBs, but supply of Sockets is unknown. So you could have a situation where no one wants to buy Slot A Athlons (because of the performance issue) in anticipation of a Socketed Duron where there aren't any MBs.

I guess I still believe that the ramp (while it could be faster) is prudent...but I do see where we could have some problems.
