Well said Pat.

Your DD is a case study of the research one should do on Gilders (or anyone else's) picks.

However, with so many sheep already in the fold, I doubt George will be embarrassed by your revelations.

Keep up the good work.

w.

PS - What happened to the convict AVNX/TERN shorter. I found his brazen approach quite entertaining.

Pat: Perhaps your assessment of AVNX is a matter of perception based on the information which you are using regarding the company.

It appears to me that you are relying strictly on the information available to you in AVNX'S S-1 which was prepared in January, 2000, in preparation for the initial public offering of AVNX. That information was compiled from data as of December, 1999. The IPO was February 3,2000.

George Gilder and associates visited AVNX in March,2000, as a part of its research for the April,2000, Gilder Letter.

George's information is more recent than yours. And from what I have been able to discover outside George's letter, his facts are correct as of the time that he wrote them.

Perhaps you could clear up this matter to your satisfaction if you called AVNX Press and Publications Office or the Office of Investor Relations. I am sure that they could provide you with current information about the company.

By using the information in the S-1 and comparing it with what is contained in the Gilder letter together with what is available from the company, you should gain an up-to-date insight into the current situation at AVNX.

If the facts are as they appear, then AVNX is truly a fast-moving company.

Perception is based on facts. And facts are available. George apparently went to the source and got the latest facts.

GG is using more up-to-date info than you, plain and simple. Things change and grow quickly, this should have been obvious to you.

Company Press Release

Avanex to Triple Size of Fremont Facility
FREMONT, Calif., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX - news) announced today that it has completed a lease for an additional 91,000 square feet of space in a building that is adjacent to its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Fremont, which will nearly triple the size of the company's corporate offices and manufacturing space.

The expansion announcement comes less than four months after the company relocated to a 54,000-square-foot site that is three times the size of Avanex's original location. Avanex expects to fully occupy the new space before October of this year.

The company's address remains Avanex Corporation, 40919 Encyclopedia Circle, Fremont, CA. 94538. The adjacent facility is at 40949 Encyclopedia Circle.

I could only find one US patent for Simon Cao as well, but here is his bio for additional info.

Dr. Cao's experience includes a lengthy list of firsts in research and development and product development in the optical field. He has been granted six U.S. patents, and 34 patents are pending.

The manufacturing space question was addressed. It would probably be wise to wait for their head count numbers in their next report before crucifying George on that point.

Definitely sloppy on the patents and manufacturing space! BTW, I do not get the GTR and could care less about Avanex. I've just been having fun lurking on this thread.

You are wrong on Simon Cao's 36 patents, most of which were issued while he was at Etek, where he invented optical isolators, filters, and other WDM devices. The rest of the nits mostly dramatize how fast the company grew between the time of the filing you quote and the last time I visited the facility. I really don't know how many of the 450 total workers were fully trained, but I saw hundreds laboring hard through the night I was there. As with all my company visits, I devoted almost all my 18 hours of interviews with Avanex to understanding the technology and its alignment with my paradigm.
