QED, Sitera, and Fast-Chip Partner to Deliver Policy Based Network Design Reference Platform

PR NEWSWIRE - May 03, 2000 08:30

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 3, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Quantum Effect Devices, Inc. (QED) (Nasdaq: QEDI), Sitera and Fast-Chip today announced an integrated solution for high performance policy-enabled networking equipment. The solution provides the basis for next generation equipment required by increased bandwidth demands combined with the need to integrate policy-based algorithms at wire speed. These requirements are fueling the need for innovative silicon solutions in the fast path.

The platform uses the QED RM7000A high performance 450Mhz MIPS RISC 64 bit microprocessor as the control plane processor, coupled with Sitera's PRISM IQ2000 network processor and Fast-Chip's PolicyEdge(TM) packet classification processor in the fast data path. The design also uses Sitera's 10/100 OctalMAC and Gigabit chipsets. The Fast-Chip, QED, and Sitera devices use matching bus and packet interfaces for assured seamless integration and interoperability. This initial reference platform will be on display in the Fast-Chip and Sitera booths at Networld+Interop, May 8 - 11th, 2000 in Las Vegas.

Today, a complete single sourced product set is not available to meet the data rates and QoS requirements facing the industry in the near future. As a result, QED, Sitera, and Fast-Chip have announced participation in each other's partners program. The initial result will be a single board reference platform that demonstrates a complete policy-based networking solution.

"The RM7000A microprocessor," stated Mr. Riodan, president and CEO of QED, "was designed as a high performance embedded controller for powering the communication revolution, and by partnering with innovative companies like Sitera and Fast-Chip, QED will continue to drive performance solutions to the networking market."

QED provides an extensive family of high performance 32/64 bit MIPS RISC microprocessors targeted at the exploding communications market. As network equipment manufacturers race to get service-enabled equipment to the market place, the range of control plane processors provided by QED allows the system designer to tailor both price and performance to meet their demanding requirements.

Sitera(R) Incorporated, a pioneer in Intelligent Network Processing, provides the performance and flexibility demanded of service-enabled, high-speed networking equipment, The Sitera Network Acceleration Platform includes intelligent network processors, Sitera's SoftNet(TM) library of networking software, and an integrated development suite. Sitera's PRISM IQ2000 network processor family ensures that system designers have the ability to grow their platforms as emerging standards dictate without the need for an expensive redesign.

"As customers demand increasing functionality, the only reasonable choice for network equipment manufacturers is to turn to programmable packet processing silicon," said Steve Flannery, President and CEO of Sitera. "The combination of Sitera's network processors, focused on data plane processing, QED's extensive line of MIPS processors, providing control plane processing, and Fast-Chip's state-of-the-art policy classification engine provides system designers with the capability to rapidly build service-enabled networking equipment. This equipment can dynamically respond to changes in network policy and give service providers and large enterprise customers the potential to control access and priority throughout their networks."

The Fast-Chip PolicyEdge platform will demonstrate a network line card solution for policy classification and will be supported under the WindRiver VxWorks real time operating system. Fast-Chip's PolicyEdge(TM) product family is a flexible, high performance packet classification processing solution that allows sophisticated policy-based switching and routing at data rates up to OC-192 line rates. The PolicyEdge(TM) solution offloads deep packet classification tasks by putting repetitive, bandwidth-consuming software functions in silicon, while preserving flexibility for new and evolving standards and protocols. Fast-Chip's "silicon-embedded software" approach enables OEMs of high performance network equipment to introduce robust QoS, security, and traffic accounting features without sacrificing performance.

"High speed, intelligent packet classification is a major bottleneck in the implementation of QoS and in the realization of differentiated Services by Internet and Application Service Providers," stated Gregg Cook, Fast-Chip president and CEO. "By providing seamless interfaces to leading network and control plane processors such as Sitera, and QED, Fast-Chip can provide off-the-shelf solutions that enable equipment network OEMs to focus on product development and differentiation while greatly improving time to market."

Fast-Chip's PolicyEdge(TM) family of products can be used to create a wide range of intelligent networking products including bandwidth managers, fast-firewalls, VPN (virtual private network) devices, access service aggregation devices, core switch routers, access routers, and network probes.

About Fast-Chip:

Fast-Chip Incorporated is a semiconductor company founded in 1998 that provides high performance acceleration solutions to networking equipment OEMs. Fast-Chip's PolicyEdge(TM) coprocessor family addresses upper layer packet classification processing and targets policy-based network equipment used at the edges of the network such as virtual private network devices, bandwidth managers, fast firewalls, service aggregation devices, core switch routers, access routers, voice over IP devices, and network probes. Fast-Chip's products are designed to leverage existing hardware and software architectures including those based on embedded processors, ASICs, or network processors, allowing network equipment OEMs to rapidly bring to market intelligent, high-performance, cost-effective products.
