Which stocks will do well in which? Internet-centric or Internet-enabled? The difference can make all the difference Please read and answer this question for me :) ANYONE! jj by Steve Harmon CEO 2000.05.03: Internet-centric Vs. Internet-Enabled; The Difference Is Key In Investing As the opening keynoter for the New York Society of Security Analysts 'Internet Economy' conference May 2 it was an honor to be before the group at the heart of the investment world. A webcast may be available soon, I'll let you know. The keynote gave me a chance to reflect on the five years since I was last speaking at the NYSSA. Back in 1995 I spoke on how the Internet would change many industries. I was the lone Internet voice then on a panel of experts on interactive media. Today the entire conference is Internet. No surprise. Other speakers include Yahoo CEO Tim Koogle, VA Linux CEO Larry Augustin, 24/7 CEO David Moore, and VerticalNet CEO Mark Walsh to name a few. The key point of my talk to kick off the conference discussed the capital inflows into the venture capital arena, the IPOs, the migration of old companies to new companies. But the single most important item is one I'd like you to think about today, because this is a differentiation that determines your understanding of the Internet and investing in it. I want to keep this brief: There are two kinds of companies-- 1) Internet centric and 2) Internet enabled The first are businesses that only do business in a digital environment (what I dub 'zero gravity'), their service or product is bit based. Their margins tend to be better and their efficiency and scaleability also superior. The second are companies that use the Internet but most of their actual business is offline. Thinner margins, less efficient, don't scale as well to Web growth. This is your challenge: name 3 public companies in the Internet that fall into each category. While we have a laundry list full of names in both arenas the idea is that by making the distinction it may clarify Internet-centric vs. Internet enabled. Respondents will be randomly selected for some cool e:harmon zero gravity hats or shirts and also featured anonymously in a future report. Internet-centric or Internet-enabled? The difference can make all the difference
