where do they get these figures? as far as i know, gold demand was at a new record in '99 . in fact, the primary supply/demand deficit this year is probably well over 1,000 tons.
in any event, German investors giving up on gold is imo a bullish contrarian signal.
also, we must not forget that the big investment banks all have large short gold positions via the carry trade and via calls they sold to the producers to hedge their hedges after the ASL blow-up. so they're not a disinterested party. they WANT the price to come down.
