Dave -

Yes - if you have a really bad back - I would get medical clearance. The catch-22 is that all the good stuff that will strengthen your back is also harmful if not done with good form.

BUT - if you keep a flat back and stand tall - I have found that my back is better than ever. It hurts - but that is muscle soreness - not skeletal pain.

In fact, I am moving a couple tons of small stone by hand up into my backyard to make a rock garden. I have to fill 2 20-gallon paint drums and carry them 100 ft and up some steps before I dump them. It works the traps, the calves and all the small balance muscles in the legs. And it is great therapy after a week in the market.

My neighbors, a bunch of Wall St. stiffs, think I am nuts. So does my wife. But my back feels bullet proof.
