I knew about the 11 year olds going to govt facilities. Sounds like a Catholic boarding school. Education and indoctrination. At least he will see his family every weekend. The close family traditions of the Cuban family did not originate in Miami, they apparently have them right there in Cuba. And yes, I had read that he would be placed in a facility when he got back -- deprogrammed, I suppose. I have no idea if Juan will be with him or not(to make sure he didn't get contaminated also) or how long it will last. But it is not a permanent separation from his family. And JUan knows this and chooses to return with his son. He feels that Elian has been brainwashed here in the US. Which is probably true. It's just that we would think of it as learning the "truth". X2-- I do not want to live in Cuba, I would not want my children raised there. I am an American. But I also don't want someone telling me that what they believe is, not just the right, but the ONLY, way to believe, or to live, or to raise my children. To me, that position smacks of the same arrogance of every dictator who ever thought he knew what was best for everyone. You belittle those who aren't falling in with you by insulting their intelligence, with asides that imply they aren't capable of intelligent discourse. We have the courts and the laws and our tripartite government to balance out the tendency of man to dictate to others, to know what is best, to seize power. We just cannot ride roughshod over one of our basic beliefs (parents' rights and the sanctity of the family) because we don't like where it leads in this instance. I don't like what Elian goes back to- but I believe his father has the right to decide that for him. By taking away that right, we threaten the rights of all parents. And that scares me- a lot.
